Een scooter is een vervoermiddel op twee wielen dat wordt aangedreven door een motor. Een kenmerk van een scooter is dat de voeten tijdens het rijden naast elkaar tussen de stuurinrichting en de zitplaats worden geplaatst. Dit is mogelijk doordat bij vrijwel alle scooters de motor, versnellingsbak en aandrijving hetzij vast verbonden zijn met de achteras, hetzij onder de zitting zijn geplaatst. De motor is dus niet vast in het frame geplaatst, zoals bij conventionele motorfietsen wel het geval is. Dit betekent dat bij scooters de motor en aandrijving meeveren met het achterwiel (onafgeveerd gewicht). Een belangrijk voordeel van de lage plaatsing van motor en aandrijving is dat het zwaartepunt van een scooter laag ligt (lager dan bij brommers en motoren), wat de stabiliteit en wegligging ten goede komt (bron: wikipedia).
